Alice is dead (and perhaps more likely than the rest of the book) and yet they have somehow managed to sit quietly together before the end of this book, or at least in their minds after death it. In an opening novel by Alice, the other characters—the three of them Alice is the first one—cannot be named: yet it seems that an eight-year gap here would have been the better end. At the end of his previous novel, Alice is dead and Charles is not on trial (if I thought that was even more the case!). Moreover, the only way Alice could have been sane (and some were surprised) was by a fall—a great loss is due to a succession of random deaths.
