Briggs Stratton, PhD, with the Centre for Developmental Ethics (CDE), and with the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Chichester, are two institutions in the UK which help to maintain and improve animal welfare and research performance. In the past, the University Medical Centre Gfre/London has been a leader and lead UK institution in its field of development and research on the genetics of generalised mental disorders. Out of the numerous efforts made during this time, two institutions, the University of Oxford and the Huddersfield Institute for Molecular Science, provided support to a number of local teams from the UK to move forward with work which had significant impact on the health of horse populations, particularly the population of whom many had been affected by this disorder. Through this support we are taking a step forward. The two institutions provide specialist medical expertise but also provide a valuable laboratory alternative for doing research. One of the research projects we are taking part in is the genetic evaluation of somatic phenotypes of the populations used and the provision for individual analysis of these genetic diseases. The management of horses is an important subject. There are a number of different forms (primarily research) available in each national slaughterhouse, and this needs more research in the field of selected animal breeds, some of which are better suited to the welfare of the wider population. With little progress being made by our experience at the site, horses are not the perfect solution to a human challenge that is too little studied. The purpose of the present Working Party is to make this work possible and to inform and make progress with regard to the production of a more suitable veterinary model for the use of the equine population in research.

Of particular interest to this group is the performance of a combination of the two local programmes.
